We would like to first thank everyone for checking up on us right after the earthquake in Taiwan. We are truly touched by your loving concerns & prayers. Mild earthquakes occur quite regularly in Taiwan, but they are usually very brief & not dangerous. This is because the island is on the circum-Pacific seismic zone, sometimes referred to as the Ring of Fire. I don’t have the most recent statistics, but I read that the average monthly earthquakes that occurred in Taiwan from 1991 to 2004 were approximately 1,554 with approximately 1,057 felt. It’s very much a part of life here in Taiwan.
Last Saturday’s earthquake occurred in Tainan, which is about 1-1/2 hours away from where we live. It was a strong one since it even shook our apartment in Taichung pretty hard. We were woken up at about 4 in the morning when our bed and whole apartment started to rattle about. Grateful to the Lord that Taichung is safe, but the people of Tainan need your prayers for the damages are quite extensive with death & injuries. There are still some people missing.
Earthquakes point to what is unstable underneath, and this is also true of the landscape of the human hearts. God has put a burden in our hearts for the working class people of Taiwan, and we love them dearly. They are such hardworking people, but as we live here longer, we are also discovering progressively more how much they need the Lord Jesus Christ in their lives. There are wreckages of sin that affects generations, binds them in fear & living for beliefs that do not lead to life.
There is no question that Chinese New Year, which is the biggest holiday in Taiwan, was interrupted by last Saturday’s earthquake. Many lives will forever be affected, but life does not stop. Life never stops nor does our task to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are perishing.
Please pray for the restoration of Tainan & those affected by the earthquake. Also pray that instability & uncertainty of life will lead the people of Taiwan to the only One who can bring peace, hope & life.
