As we move into our missionary endeavors here in Gangshan (岡山), there’s a growing joy within our spirit.  Our joy first derives from getting to know more & more Taiwanese.  Maybe I have mentioned this before, but when a Taiwanese or Taiwanese family open their hearts to us, it makes everything worthwhile & whatever difficulties we may be facing at the moment dissipate to the background.  Learning Mandarin also brings much joy & growing freedom as we are able to progressively communicate better.  We still have a long way to go for learning Mandarin is a lifelong process, but when God opens our ears so that we can understand & loosens our tongue so that we can express what’s in our hearts, it’s an occasion to celebrate.  Of course, there’s God’s hand working patiently & faithfully in our lives & ministry as well.  I guess what I am trying to say is that we are so very grateful to the Lord for the privilege of being in His harvest field.  There is no other place we’d rather be.

After 2 years of language learning it is still a real struggle, but we have a new source of joy.  It’s a joy that comes from being able to share God’s Word.  Before coming to Taiwan, I have routinely prepared & preached countless sermons.  The problem with that (for me) was that I would forget what a privilege it is to proclaim God’s truth, and what an amazing opportunity it is to magnify our Lord Jesus Christ.  Well, here in Taiwan I have rediscovered the joy of sharing God’s truth.  Probably because it takes greater effort to finish a message due to my limitation in Mandarin.  And because my messages are simple, I have to make sure what I am saying is biblical & necessary.  Also because I make many mistakes in my delivery, I can’t help, but to cling to God for His help & grace.  It may sound like a tremendous challenge, and it is, but still what a joy it brings to my heart!  What the truth of God can do despite my limitations, I cannot possibly predict.  I’m just grateful for the opportunities to deliver.

Last Saturday, I had the privilege of sharing God’s Word with our church college & young adult group.  What a joy it was to be with them.  I was so grateful for their patience & attentiveness.  In a couple of weeks, I will have an opportunity to share a message and spend time getting to know a group of teens in a more rural part of our area.  We think that this will be an outreach we can do every month.

Although our lives are getting busier, our joy in missions is becoming greater as well.  Of course this does not mean that there aren’t difficulties & challenges, but the joy that Christ brings is a different matter altogether.  We are in an active spiritual battleground and there are discouragements that try to bring us down, but time & time again we are lifted with the joy of the Lord and encouragement from you, our brothers and sisters in Christ.
