New ministry center at Wanhua

It never ceases to surprise us whenever we visit OMF missionaries & their ministries.  We are always humbled by their willingness to submit & go anywhere God has led them, by their long prayerful perseverance, and by their humble spirit.  We see Philippians 2:3-8 being lived out in our fellow missionaries.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves… have the same mindset as Christ Jesus… he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant… he humbled himself by becoming obedient…”

All 3 of our ministry visits have taught us something, but I have to say that the most essential lesson that we learned from our fellow missionaries is the art of self-forgetfulness in light of Jesus’ glory & beauty!  When you spend time with these missionaries, you can’t help but to notice how their thoughts & speech revolve around what JESUS is doing & what HE can & promises to do rather than what I have done & what MY plans are.  They sacrifice & do much with the love of Christ and He has blessed their obedience.  This is what we saw in the outskirts of Kaohsiung, in a small town called Puxin, and last week in Taipei.

Last Thursday to Sunday we had the opportunity to do our last ministry visit before we start discerning where God would have us be.  We visited 2 areas in Taipei.  The first area was Wanhua District in Taipei.  Unlike the images of Taipei that we are familiar with, Wanhua was more of a ghetto with government housing, troubled families & gang activities.  We were able to spend a couple of days prayer walking through the neighborhood & doing outreach to the children & youth.  Jeanette & I even had some time to share our stories with some teenagers.  When we talked about family we noticed that their faces became stern.  When we asked if any of them has an older brother, they whispered amongst themselves and didn’t know how to answer.   We learned that they have half siblings and step siblings and some that don’t live with them, etc. so it’s hard for them to know exactly how to answer such a question.  Later, we were told that one of the girls recently lost her father but she felt no grief over his death.  He was an alcoholic, often abusive, and she tells people that she was happy he died earlier than expected.  Our hearts truly went out to these teens who have lived through & seen much & yet who are still children seeking guidance & love.

Another day, we visited the Shop Workers Church.  Another amazing ministry.  This ministry reaches out to shop workers, young people with no place to go, single mothers & children in need.  They have a dorm for men and a dorm for women.  Many women are single mothers with their children.  There is a second-hand store & café where the women can work and support themselves while they find healing from abusive husbands that they left.

We went to worship at their church on Sunday morning.  It was small space but packed full and we could really sense the love in there.  Whether we were worshipping or breaking bread together, it was apparent that lives are being restored & transformed there.  Although this special ministry was started by OMF missionaries, it has been handed over to a Taiwanese pastor & his wife to oversee because that is OMF’s ultimate goal to start & plant churches/ministries, and then to train & establish local leaders in those places.  Letting go of something you have invested so much in & built up is not easy.  But these missionaries are those who have lost sight of themselves in light of Christ’s glory.

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me (Luke 9:23).”

Please join us in prayer for these ministries to the urban marginalized people.
