Philippians 2:6-8 explains, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man He humbled Himself…”
Jesus Christ has shown that the key to reaching out & proclaiming the gospel to humanity was to become one of us. The Son of God, rather than being a distant & impersonal God, became a man & dwelt among us to teach & show us the way to eternal life. Hebrews 4:15 explains that Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are – yet He did not sin.” In other words, He understands our struggles, weaknesses, hurts & insecurities. Therefore, people opened their ears & hearts to Him.
In order to share Christ with the working class, we need to be immersed in their culture. We must live among them, eat the food they eat & rub shoulders with them, so that they are hearing the gospel from their friends rather than outsiders. Building relationships will take a long time, but what is so great is that the working class people are very relational & enjoy sitting around together & sharing their lives. By having genuine conversations, doing activities & serving together in the community, eating together, getting to know each other’s families, we can establish lasting relationships. And because we are doing this in the community, the love & truth of Christ we share will inevitably permeate throughout that community. In other words, rather than asking people to come to us, we the church need to go out to the community where the people are, and let Jesus Christ shine!
