For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12).

Last Friday marks the mid-point of the ghost month here in Taiwan.  Although ghost month rituals are carried out throughout the month, it is on the 15th day that the majority of the rituals take place to appease the ghosts.  On this day countless homes & businesses set up offering tables full of food & drinks for the ghosts and burn incense & ghost money.

The motivation for these acts is always fear.

Most Taiwanese fear that failing to appease the ghosts during this month will lead to troubled life with bad fortunes, failed endeavors & spiritual oppression.

What we fear in life controls us.

If they control us, then they have our hearts & minds in bondage.

What rules over us ultimately becomes the object of our worship.

This is why God calls us throughout the Bible not to be afraid of anything.  Instead have the fear of the Lord for He alone deserves our worship.

I have to admit that past two weeks, especially the last weekend, I was overwhelmed with sadness because first our Creator & Savior is not being honored, but also because I know that bowing down to idols & ghosts will never lead to life.

This week, I want to ask you to keep Taiwan in your hearts & in your prayers.  Please pray that the lost here will come to know God who is to be feared & worshipped for He alone can lead them to life eternal!

Proverbs 14:27 reads, “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.”

Please pray also for us as we labor to share the message of the cross in Taiwan where the powers of this dark world & the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms have strong holds on the hearts of people.
